When I Grow Up…

I would like to be Jenny Lawson mashed up with Kay Jamison.

Please.

Pretty Please.

Which means I would be a hilarious NY Times besting-selling author/blogger AND a world-famous clinical psychologist.

FEEL THE POWER.

I hit up the local library and came  upon 2 books:

  1. Let’s Pretend This Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir) By Jenny Lawson
  2. Night Falls Fast: Understanding Suicide By: Kay Redfield Jamison

Basically, I got a hilarious book about someone who struggles with mental illness and a nonfiction book about suicide. It’s all about balance.

I recently reread Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson (so I kind of was going backwards with reading her second book first, but it worked out). I. LOVE. IT. She manages to turn a life-long battle with depression and anxiety into a series of funny, relateable entries/snippets from her life. If you haven’t read it, you should. NOW.

It is the best. Truly.

Reading about her struggles helps break through the overwhelming isolation that can be created by mental illness. It shows that you are not alone in your pain. There is someone who understands what it is like, and that is quite comforting.
